Abu Dhabi is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Dubai. The capital is home to a landmark mosque, a world-class art museum, a long waterfront and some of the region’s best-known leisure attractions. The two cities are connected by a modern highway, and the drive is usually around an hour and a half each way, though traffic, time of day and your exact pickup point can change that.
You can make the trip by taxi, bus or rental car, but a private chauffeur changes the experience. You do not need to navigate unfamiliar roads, find parking at each stop or arrange the return journey after a long day. This guide covers how to plan the day, a sample itinerary, which vehicle to choose and what to confirm before you book.
A day in Abu Dhabi often involves several stops spread across a large city. Having a driver means the car is waiting wherever you finish, whether that is a mosque entrance, a museum or a restaurant. You avoid parking searches and the stress of unfamiliar interchanges. You can also use the journey itself: the drive is a good time to rest, review your plans or catch up on messages.
For families and groups, the benefit is bigger still. Everyone travels together, luggage and shopping stay in the vehicle, and nobody has to be the designated driver.
This is a flexible template. Your chauffeur can adjust the order and timing around your interests, opening hours and pickup location.
Early morning: depart Dubai. Leaving early helps you avoid the heaviest traffic and gives you more time in the cooler part of the day. A pickup between 7:00 and 8:00 AM works well for most itineraries.
Mid-morning: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the most visited landmarks in the UAE, the mosque is known for its white marble courtyards and scale. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and women are generally asked to cover their hair. Check current visiting hours and any entry requirements before you go, as these can change around prayer times and religious occasions.
Lunch: Corniche or city centre. Abu Dhabi’s Corniche offers a long waterfront promenade and plenty of dining options. It is a relaxed place to break up the day, and your chauffeur can drop you close to the restaurant of your choice.
Afternoon: culture or leisure. Depending on your interests, choose between Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island for art and architecture, Qasr Al Watan for a look at the UAE’s ceremonial and political heritage, or Yas Island for theme parks and entertainment. Pick one main attraction rather than trying to see everything, as each deserves a few hours.
Evening: return to Dubai. Depending on your schedule, you may leave after an early dinner or stay for sunset on the waterfront. Tell your chauffeur your preferred return time in advance so the booking and any waiting time are quoted correctly.
The length of the drive makes comfort a bigger factor than it is on a short city transfer.
One or two travellers are well suited to an executive sedan such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series, which offer a quiet, smooth ride for the highway journey.
Families do best in an SUV such as the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon XL or Yukon Denali, which give children and adults more space and leave room for bags and strollers.
Small groups can choose the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, where everyone sits together and the cabin suits conversation and a long day.
Larger groups of up to ten can travel in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van, which keeps the whole party in one vehicle.
Whatever you choose, share the number of adults, children and bags in advance, and request child seats if you need them.
A trip to another emirate should not be priced by multiplying a city hourly rate. Long routes are better handled with a route-specific fixed quotation based on your pickup, destination, vehicle and plan for the day. The biggest variable is what happens at the other end. There are two common options:
Tell the booking team which option you prefer so the quotation covers the whole journey.
As with any chauffeur booking, the written quotation should be your reference. Before confirming, check that it states the vehicle category, the route and stops, the total duration or return arrangement, the waiting time included, the overtime rate if you stay longer, whether fuel, Salik and standard parking are included, and the change and cancellation terms.
If you are travelling from the airport and want to continue directly to Abu Dhabi, or are heading to Abu Dhabi’s own airport, mention your flight details so the pickup can be timed around your landing or check-in.
The same approach works for other destinations. Private journeys can also be arranged from Dubai to Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Al Ain, and cross-border routes to Oman can be requested on enquiry. For each, share your pickup, destination, preferred vehicle and return plan to receive a route-specific quotation.
